About Robyn Smith

Robyn C. Smith graduated from U.S.C. Law School in 1992. After clerking for the Honorable Judith N. Keep in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California and working at a large San Francisco law firm, Robyn accepted a position with the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii in 1995.  She worked as an Americorps attorney and provided legal services to victims of domestic violence on the island of Kauai. In 1997, she became managing attorney of the Windward Legal Aid office on Oahu, where she provided legal assistance to low-income people in many different areas, including consumer law, public benefits, housing, family law, and disability benefits.  She designed Legal Aid's Chapter 7 bankruptcy clinic, handled lawsuits against corporations committing unfair and illegal business practices, and worked on legislation.

In 1998, Robyn became the Directing Attorney of the Consumer Law Project at Public Counsel in Los Angeles, which handles over 400 consumer law cases a year. In this position, she again provided free legal services to victims of consumer fraud in many different areas, including predatory lending, home equity fraud, payday loan abuse, bankruptcy, vocational school fraud, debt collection abuse, and auto loan fraud. Robyn started Public Counsel's bankruptcy project, which assists clients with Chapter 7 petitions, non-dischargeability proceedings, reaffirmation agreements, bankruptcy petition preparer fraud, and other types of legal issues that arise in both Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcies.  She handled and supervised high impact litigation in many of these areas, participated in legislative advocacy at both the state and federal levels, recruited pro bono attorneys, and continued to provide outreach and education to various Los Angeles communities.

Currently, Robyn is a Deputy Attorney General for the California Attorney General's office. She continues her work in consumer law on behalf of mostly low-income debtors.

Robyn has served as a member of the Consumer Financial Services Committee for the State Bar of California, the Kauai Family Violence Council, the Los Angeles Real Estate Fraud Task Force, the L.A. Immigration Consultant Fraud Task Force,  and the L.A. Fiduciary Abuse Specialist Team, as well as a negotiator during rulemaking sessions before the U.S. Department of Education.  She was a founder of the Kauai Kids First Divorce Education Project and a coach for high school mock trial teams.

Robyn is currently a member of the Sustainable World ministry at All Saints' Church, Pasadena, the National Association of Consumer Advocates, the Los Angeles Advocates for Consumer Justice, and the SEC.
